Why a personal planner works for me!

Let’s face it, life gets crazy and there will be times when we forget to do something or go somewhere. It happens! Between work, my son’s activities, and home stuff, I needed a system that was going to help me organize everything. In the past, I always relied on my phone for everything but you can only put so many things in your phone’s calendar and I always feared that one day I would lose all of my information due to a software update.

With that said, earlier this year, I decided to go back to using a traditional planner and I am so happy that I did. I love making my to do lists and checking things off gives me a huge sense of accomplishment which is great because that means the planner is serving its purpose.

At the moment, I am using two planners simply because I wanted to keep certain things separate from each other. I use one planner for home stuff (doctor’s appointments, finances, etc.) and the second planner is used to help me manage my blog (a place to jot down ideas, keep track of my posts, etc.)

Since I started using a planner back in February, it has taken me some time to find the perfect planner for me. I’ve tried several different ones however they just were not functional for what I needed to use them for. I decided to make the investment and I purchased the rose gold Kate Spade personal planner. The color is beautiful and it is so customizable in the sense that I would only have to purchase new calendar inserts every year rather than buying a whole new planner and not to mention, the decorating possibilities are endless.

After watching tons of planner related videos on You Tube,I had no idea that this whole planning community / phenomenon even existed and now I’m hooked. I am a proud #Plannernerd! In all of the videos that I watched, the women were actually using stickers to decorate their planners and I immediately wanted to do the same.

Why not dress it up a little and have fun with it. I used to scrapbook years ago however now I wanted something to serve as my creative outlet and I believe I’ve found it because using this method of planning also allows me to keep track of life’s important moments.

Since I started using a planner again, I’ve joined several Facebook groups and everyone is so welcoming and always willing to offer suggestions, give you tips and tricks on different ways to use your planner, heads up on any awesome sales at the craft stores, etc. I am so happy that I’ve met some amazing friends in the planner community!

Don’t forget to follow me on Instagram because that is where I share the majority of my planner related pictures. I share how I decorate my planner and where I have purchased cool new planning goodies.

How do you keep organized? Do you rely on your phone calendar or do you also use a traditional planner? Do you have any tips and tricks that have helped you stay organized? Please do share with us by leaving a comment below. I’d leave to hear your methods of keeping organized in this crazy day to day world that we live in.

Until next time…

I have been eyeing this planner for a while and cant decide whether to get it or not. But I love KS and it would totally match my wallet. Can you recommend some good Planner FB groups?

Hi there. Prior to getting the Kate Spade, I had a Kikki K. There are several groups on Facebook named after the type of planner you are interested in. I just joined the Kate Spade Planners Club. You can also look up to see if there are any FB Planner groups that consist of people in your area.

I use my google calendar in collaboration with my personal planner. I can’t wait for my 2016 planner to arrive, I am so giddy about it.

      Hi Petra,
I’ve heard that a lot of people use Google Calendar for editorial reasons. I actually use the 365 Happy Planner for my blog planning. It has just the amount of space I need to write down ideas, plans, keep track of stats, and more. You’re not alone in the planner adrenaline aspect of it!

I’m a big planner fan! Right now I’m using a bullet journal to keep track of my day to day tasks and a few planners that I designed for blogging and business. If I don’t write it down, it doesn’t get done around here, so planners are essential for me.

I totally agree Samantha. I started using a planner earlier this year and I love it. It totally keeps me on track. I am currently using two planners to keep things separate and organized. Crossing things off of my to do list makes me feel accomplished and ready to tackle on the next tasks.

I like paper planners much better. I like seeing everything at once and don’t feel like I can do that with an online calendar. I have been looking for a new planner, so I will check out the Kate Spade ones! Thanks!

I couldn’t agree more. I have to use an electronic calendar at work and I hate it. You can contact your local Kate Spade outlet and ask that they call you when they receive more in stock.

I’ve got big respect for you for doing this. I don’t know if it’s my personality but even though this would probably help me, I have such a hard time getting something like a planner going. Hope it goes well!
Also, I loved your mention of “watching tons of planner related videos on You Tube” I had no idea that even existed!

Aww thanks! I realized earlier this year that something has to give. I actually learned about the Planner Community on You Tube and from there it’s history LOL! My younger brother actually asked me to make him a planner to keep track of work and school and now he’s all set.

I also love my paper planner. It keeps me grounded. Mo also love to look back on previous years and see what happened.

I agree as I rely on my planner for everything now. I keep the inserts for months that have passed for the same reason.

I did the same thing! Last year I purchased a gold Kikki K planner and I love it! I am trying to balance between keeping things digital and non-traditional so I don’t have to lug my planner everywhere, but I love the feeling of being able to cross something off of my list. For 2016, I am thinking about the Day Designer to switch things up.

I don’t know why I didn’t start using a paper planner sooner. I’m thinking of getting the Sugar Paper planner line from Target to use for work. I hate relying on our Outlook calendar because for example right now, it’s having problems connecting to the server.

Beautiful color! I love using my planner and phone too 🙂

Thank you! I wasn’t one of the lucky ones to get it as soon as it came out but was so happy when I finally did receive it. Finally have planner peace! I’m happy!

  9. November 20, 2015 / 2:57 PM

I need to write everything down, putting it in my phone doesn’t help me. In the market for a 2016 planner!

If I could recommend one thing, make sure to do your research before you buy one so that you can make sure you’re purchasing the right one for exactly everything you need it for. It’s all about preference too (coil bound, ring bound, bulky, slim, etc.) I hope you find the right one for you.

  10. November 22, 2015 / 2:20 PM

I’m considering of having two planners. 1 for personal use and 1 for blog use. But I’m still indecisive lol

I didn’t start using two planners until the summer time. I wanted to keep my home stuff separate from anything related to my blog. I carry both with me during the workweek but they stay home over the weekend when I’m out. Using both planners does really work for me.

I love my paper planner – I was a franklin covey girl in high school already and haven’t outgrown it in 20 years with a completely different life. I’m currently using a customized bullet journal in addition to keeping my coaching calendar electronically. The e-calendar is great because it automates client reminders, follow-up etc. so I just keep those hours perpetually blocked in the paper version. So far so good!

I used a planner in high school too and also after I graduated. I used to rely on my phone’s calendar for everything but there’s something about seeing things written down and crossing them off my list just makes me feel more accomplished. Hey each person has their own system that works for them.
