Hi everyone! Today I am going to be sharing the Quick and Simple way that I reorganized my desk over the weekend. I decided that it was finally time to clear up the clutter and reorganize things to make my work space more functional. Saturday night, I was in my living room watching tv and just staring at my desk area because I knew that I had to eventually clean it up. I decided to record it also so that you all can see the clutter that existed before and how awesome it looks now.
My house is spacious however I do not like for the rooms to be cluttered with too much furniture which is why I didn’t buy a desk when I first moved in four years ago. I was so excited about this desk that I actually blogged about it last year when I first purchased it. I was browsing the back to school section at Target and there it was on clearance! I bet you can guess what happened next right? LOL You can read more about that here.
As you can see from the video, my desk did look super cute with the flowers and a quote in the frame however now I need it to be more functional than anything. As always, I watched several videos on You Tube of others showing off their desk areas and the DIY projects that they created to make their desk look nice and functional. A couple of weeks ago, I compiled a few ideas and went to my local IKEA to pick up just a couple of things for my work space.
While I was there looking around, I definitely would have loved to purchase a new desk like the ones that I saw in the videos but unfortunately I wouldn’t have the space as I barely have space for the small one that I had now. If you have ever been to an IKEA store, you know that is very easy to be overwhelmed in that store. I had to contain myself from spending too much so I only purchased a three tier letter tray and a coordinating trash basket.
The first thing that I did was to start moving things around on the desk to see how they would look, removed a few things and ultimately decided as to what I needed and what I could do without. I went through each of the drawers in the grey and white three drawer cart. Sometimes functionality will overrule cuteness but that doesn’t mean that you can’t keep one cute thing on your desk as decoration.
As I stated in the video, I consolidated everything that was in this 3 drawer cart
and now I only have what I actually need on hand.
a letter sized three hole punch / Personal sized six hole punch
Stapler / staples / staple remover
Paperclips / binder clips / Scotch Tape
Checkbook / Envelopes
Extra printer ink
Extra post its
Camera / charger
Printer Cord / extra USB charger
Planner corner punch
Home 3 ring binder (to learn more about what I store in this binder,
you can check out that post here)
Extra empty 3 ring binders / Pendaflex file organizer
Printer paper / Avery labels
Extra planner supplies (stickers, etc.)
Up until this point, I stored our smaller printer in the dining room hutch however my son and I agreed that it was best to keep it out as we do use it often. I decided to put the printer on top of the grey and white cart. I do still use our house phone periodically so I placed it on top of the printer. In the frame, there is a quote that says “Don’t quick your Day Dream” which serves as my motivation to keep going no matter how hard things can be sometimes.
On the silver 3 tiered letter tray, my business planner is on the top shelf, a couple of spare notebooks on the second and extra printer paper on the third. I removed the flowers and sorted through the mason jar which serves as my pen/pencil holder. I only kept a few pens and pencils and the rest are stored in the cart.
The white bowl has a white out corrector and a memory card for my camera. I purchased the the three tiered teal organizer from Home Goods several months ago. The only thing that I will store there are extra memo pads, post its and photo printer paper. The Paris themed shoe box underneath it contains some planner decoration stuff such as washi tape, adhesive rollers, and mini precise scissors.
I do have a larger printer that sits underneath the desk which is mainly used for larger projects however I did not have another place to put it so it will stay there for now. As you can see from the video, I do not really have space for a cute desk chair therefore I simply use a dining room chair when I need to. I still need to organize and find a home for the other craft stuff that I have. For now, I will simply store it some where that I can easily get to it when I need it.
So I hope that this post and video gave you some inspiration to to reorganize your work/home desk area. I can tell you first hand that these are the types of projects that we tend to put off until later. I am so happy that I finally took the time to tackle this project and I couldn’t be happier with the final result.
