Today I am going to show you how to create a home binder for all of those important papers that we need to keep accessible at all times. I created one last summer after I saw a picture on Instagram posted by a fellow blogger/planner Jen DuFore. The binder that she created was intended to store home warranties, etc. You can check out her blog post here. I decided to create my binder to store only personal documents / information that I would possibly need at a moment’s notice to prevent the hassle of searching through multiple bins in which I store all of my paperwork.
It is important to keep a master file cabinet or similar storage system to keep all of the major documents that you need to keep for several years at a time. The purpose of the binder is to store the most important items in a central place so that you can locate them at all times.
Supplies that you are going to need:
- 3 Ring binder with pockets inside (Depending on what you will be using it for will determine the size that you should buy. I purchased a 3″ binder)
- Heavy duty sheet protectors
- Tabbed dividers (preferably those with pockets)
- 3 hole punch
In my binder, I have created sections for
- Checkbook / Labels for envelopes
- Birth certificates / Social Security Cards
- School paperwork for my son
- Current year tax documents
- Current bank statements, bills due, etc.
After I purchased everything to create the binder, I posted a picture on Instagram and tagged Jen. To my surprise, she liked and reposted it! She is one of the first planner girls that I started following on Instagram. Note: The username I had in her repost was before I created an Instagram account dedicated to my blog.
After each divider, I insert the documents that I have hole punched and I place a plastic sheet protector behind the papers to store any documents that I do not wish to have holes. In the pocket of each divider, I place the most important items for that specific section such as a coupon that I plan to use soon, my checkbook, a payment that I need to make, etc. Ever since I made this binder, I have discovered that it has in fact helped me tremendously. It is a huge sense of relief when I am able to find something so much quicker by maintaining this binder system.
If you have been searching for a way to quickly and efficiently store your important paperwork, I highly recommend that you create a binder or however many binders you need to store any and all documents that you would like to keep handy at all times. Tip: Check Pinterest for free printables that you can store in your binders for record keeping.
Also, I forgot to mention that I purchased everything at Target for a total of $25.00. Sometimes it’s the littlest things that can make your life so much easier. Well I hope that you all enjoyed my helpful tips. I’d love to hear any organizational tips you may have or things that you have done to help you in your day to day life so please make sure to leave a comment below and share your suggestions!
